Mechanisms of Change in Adolescent Anorexia Nervosa Treatment: Scoping Review Protocol
Abstract
Eating disorders among adolescents represent a growing public health concern. Anorexia nervosa, characterized by prolonged restriction of energy intake, an intense fear of weight gain, and a distorted body image, has one of the highest mortality rates among mental illnesses. Although family-based treatment is considered the gold-standard approach for adolescent anorexia nervosa, fewer than half of adolescents who receive this treatment achieve remission. The purpose of this project is to identify and map mechanisms of change within treatment associated with adolescent anorexia nervosa through a scoping review. Understanding treatment mechanisms of change is essential for improving prognosis and informing clinical decision-making. The findings of this project are expected to guide future research and inform clinical practice by highlighting key mechanisms that should be prioritized in treatment. Ultimately, this work aims to contribute to the development of more effective and optimized treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa.
