The Psychological Effect of Authority-Related Language: A Conceptual Framework
Abstract
This paper proposes a conceptual framework suggesting that words associated with authority, dominance, or hierarchical superiority can evoke negative emotional responses such as discomfort or distrust. The framework argues that these reactions arise from a combination of evolved sensitivity to power imbalances and culturally transmitted historical experiences in which authority figures were often associated with control or oppression. Rather than claiming universal or genetic effects, the paper emphasizes context, semantic framing, and cultural variation, offering directions for future empirical research on how language influences psychological responses to power.
