Abstract

In previous years, we studied the phenomenon of isostasy, and based on this, we created a map of Hungary’s Moho depth based on isostasy. Defining the other boundary surface was more challenging because the Conrad boundary surface does not appear everywhere, is not so easy to identify, and is only a feature of the continental crust. This boundary separates the crust composed of sial {Si–Al} and sima {Si–Mg} – that is, the boundary between the upper crust and the lower crust. Sometimes this boundary is sharp, sometimes it is so thick that we often refer to it as the middle crust. The depth range of the Conrad boundary also corresponds to the depth of the Curie temperature of iron (Fe), so magnetic and magnetotelluric phenomena may also be associated with this boundary. Kalmár and his co-authors examined the depth of the Moho and Conrad surfaces across borders as part of the Alp- Array program, based on data of passive seismic measurement networks. In this study, we extended our isostasy-based investigations beyond national borders to cover the entire Carpathian Basin, which was made possible by depth data from internal sedimentary basins, and compared the data with results obtained from less frequent measured seismological data, and then we made a correction based on the minimum and maximum Moho depths obtained from previous seismic measurements.
