Asthma remission is possible! Understanding the criteria: an integrative review
Abstract
In recent years, the notion of asthma remission has emerged as a potential therapeutic target, especially in the context of biological therapies and treat-to-target approaches. Different international expert groups have proposed formal definitions and criteria for remission, generally composed of multiple domains (symptoms, exacerbations, lung function, biomarkers, oral corticosteroid use). However, these proposals are heterogeneous with respect to methodology, minimum duration, and emphasis on clinical, functional or biological outcomes. In this scenario, it becomes relevant to synthesize, in an integrative way, the available consensuses and expert documents, identifying convergences, differences and practical implications for the use of remission as a therapeutic target in asthma. This mapping is particularly useful to guide clinical practice in moderate-to-severe asthma, the design of clinical studies, and the formulation of policies in health systems that incorporate biological therapies. Te objective of this project is conduct an integrative literature review to identify, describe and compare definitions and criteria for asthma remission proposed in consensuses and expert documents published between 2019 and 2025, and to discuss their applicability as a therapeutic target in clinical practice.
