The Role of ChatGPT in Reading Speed and Comprehension During Literature Reviews: A Comprehensive Review
Abstract
This study aims to examine reading speed and comprehension accuracy during the literature review process. The increasing volume of scholarly publications has made academic research more demanding, as reviewing a large number of research papers requires substantial time and cognitive effort. To address these challenges, researchers are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI), tools such as ChatGPT are being widely used because manual reading is difficult and timeconsuming, and AI can assist researchers in reading and summarizing texts more efficiently. In this study a comprehensive literature review was conducted to review and describe findings from twenty selected articles. Findings from the reviewed studies show that AI can read faster, summarize quickly and helps scan many papers which saves a lot of time. The evidence further suggests that AI works well when text is factual and language is simple. AI summaries help readers understand better specially those readers who find reading difficulties. The analysis indicates that AI faces challenges in understanding emotions, culture and sensitive meanings. Overall, the study concludes that AI should help humans, not replace them and should be used together with human thinking. This keeps critical thinking and understanding safe during literature review process.
