Interprofessional Education, in Pre-Qualification Healthcare Programmes, about Obesity Management: A Scoping Review of Approaches, Outcomes and Gaps
Abstract
Interprofessional education (IPE) is increasingly recognised as an essential approach for preparing healthcare students to collaborate effectively in addressing complex health needs. Obesity management, in particular, benefits from coordinated, team-based care that integrates knowledge and skills from multiple professional disciplines. However, despite growing interest in IPE, there is limited clarity on how IPE interventions focused specifically on obesity management are designed, delivered, and evaluated. Existing literature highlights the importance of interprofessional collaboration for improving patient outcomes, yet it remains unclear what types of IPE approaches related to obesity have been implemented, what outcomes have been assessed, and where gaps remain. A scoping review is therefore warranted to systematically map the available evidence and identify the range of existing educational interventions, study designs, and reported learner and patient outcomes. This review will provide an overview of current evidence and inform future educational practice, research, and curriculum development in interprofessional obesity education for healthcare students.
