Affective Politics and Electoral Behavior
Abstract
Affective Politics and Electoral Behavior focuses on the role of emotions in shaping political attitudes, electoral choices, and patterns of participation over time. The project examines how affective orientations such as sympathy, antipathy, and broader emotional climates influence vote decisions, abstention, and forms of democratic engagement. It brings together theoretical work on the sociopolitical function of disaffection with empirical research on the measurement of emotions in public opinion, including cross cultural approaches and longitudinal analyses. Through a combination of conceptual development and applied research, the project contributes to a deeper understanding of how emotional dynamics operate as structuring forces in electoral behavior, while remaining analytically distinct from both forecasting oriented electoral modeling and culture centered studies of music and media.
