Abstract

This article analyses the contribution of Catholic women to the processes of democratic participation, focusing on the role played by Catholic women’s associations during the Fascist period, the Resistance, and the Constituent phase. Particular attention is devoted to the foundation of the Women’s Movement of the Christian Democratic Party and to the achievement of women’s suffrage. Drawing on extensive historiographical and archival research, the article argues that the experience of the Resistance constituted a crucial turning point for many women, fostering processes of identity transformation and opening new pathways to political citizenship, despite the persistence of patriarchal frameworks and enduring cultural resistance within both ecclesiastical and political institutions.
