The Trilingual Gender Stereotypes Database (TGSD)
Abstract
Gender-stereotype research often relies on language-specific materials that hinder cross-cultural comparison. We introduce the Trilingual Gender Stereotypes Database (TGSD) – a validated corpus of stereotype statements in English, Hebrew, and Arabic. Independent samples of native English (n = 95), Hebrew (n = 440), and Arabic (n = 125) speakers rated how characteristic each statement was of “men” and of “women.” Stereotypicality was indexed by the absolute difference between congruent and incongruent gender ratings. Items showing large discrepancies between male and female raters were excluded, yielding balanced masculine, feminine, and neutral statements subsets within each language. The TGSD therefore offers a culture-sensitive, gender-balanced stimulus set with continuous stereotypicality scores, enabling precise tests of gender stereotypes across three linguistic contexts. All materials, anonymized data, and analysis code are publicly available to facilitate extension and future applications.
