Abstract

Live cell microscopy is a fundamental tool for biological and biomedical research. Nevertheless, conventional imaging modalities suffer from disadvantages such as use of toxic labels, lack of specificity and sensitivity and optical attenuation of water. This thesis concerns the characterization of a mid-infrared optoacoustic microscopy system that can address these limitations. It demonstrates label-free detection of specific metabolites and monitoring of dynamic processes in living cells, highlighting the unique potential of this microscope for translational medicine.
