Abstract
In this thesis, a literature review was conducted in which different methods of separation of hydrogen-nitrogen and hydrogen-oxygen mixtures were compared. The thesis focuses on two different separation methods: pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and membrane separation. The comparisons considered the method’s requirements such as pressure and temperature and the results of the use of the method such as selectivity and purity. The literature review was conducted to find the best possible method for both gas mixtures, results of which would be pure hydrogen. In the review it was observed that there are many methods and separation materials for hydrogen-nitrogen separation. The reviewed methods had H2/N2 selectivities of 3 to 1000 depending on the material. With the use of a separation membrane made of nanoporous graphene (NPG) selectivity of 1.7· 1021 was achieved. With the use of PSA hydrogen purities of 99.25–99.99 % were achieved with the best recovery of 80.0 %. The methods were able to produce high purity hydrogen. The thesis only found one functioning method and material for hydrogen-oxygen separation. With the use of supported liquid membranes (SLM) made of perfluorocarbons H2/O2 selectivies of 7–100 were achieved. Although the problem with the forementioned membranes was a short lifecycle and evaporation the liquid from the membrane.
