Gamifying Sustainability: Using Serious Video Games to Influence Individuals Ecological Attitudes, Habits and Knowledge
Abstract
This study explored how video games could be implemented to reduce humanity’s climate footprint on an individual level. With the growing interest of using gamification to influence players' behaviours and attitudes towards sustainability, this study explored how video games could be designed to influence individuals and the actual effect gamification of sustainability had on them. A prototype of a video game was designed and tested on players to measure the effect education and nudging had in a video game on the players’ knowledge, attitudes and habits regarding sustainability and ecological diets. Findings from this study contributed to the understanding of how video games could be designed to influence individuals' real world sustainable behavior and to research regarding experiments exploring the effect of serious ecological video games.
