Abstract

ABSTRACT: The forecast of extreme events is one of the major challenges of operational meteorology. To understand dynamic and thermodynamic processes associated with extreme events such as heat waves and urban heat islands in South America, it is important for the advancement of the Numerical Weather Forecast (NWF), which in turn contributes to the existence of forms of mitigation and warning for the population. In addition, the greater complexity of numerical models, especially in the surface scheme associated with highly urbanized regions, makes it more difficult to evaluate PNT products with traditional statistical metrics. Therefore, the use of more robust metrics helps quantify systematic errors, which can also contribute to the understanding of the interaction of the components of the Earth system. This study represents the first investigation of the synergy between urban heat islands and Heatwave (HW) events conducted in a tropical region of South America. The objective of this research was to analyze the spatial interaction processes between heatwaves and the Urban Heat Island (UHI) over the São Paulo Metropolitan Region (SPMR) during the austral summer. A total of 24 HW that directly impacted the SPMR during the austral summer between 2002 and 2022 were identified. The results indicate that most episodes were associated with the South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) and persistent anticyclonic systems, which contributed to increased extreme temperatures. During these episodes, amplification of UHI was observed both in intensity and spatial extent, especially in the eastern and northeastern zones of the SPMR urban area. During the HW, an increase in sensible heat flux and net radiation was observed in urban areas, while suburban regions showed a higher latent heat flux. The Urban Boundary Layer (UBL) was deeper, more stable, and characterized by thermal inversions during HW, limiting vertical mixing and intensifying heat retention. The February 2014 case study confirmed these average patterns, with lower wind speeds and increased temperatures during HW events, in addition to showing the influence of the sea breeze on nocturnal ICU. The evaluation of the MPAS-A atmospheric model (Model for Prediction Across ScalesAtmosphere), even without urban parameterization, indicated an ability to represent thermal magnitude. However, the absence of an urban scheme resulted in an unrealistic representation of surface hydrology (soil moisture), demonstrating the need for future simulations with urban surface parameterizations.
