WRITING PRACTICES IN OLD SAXON MANUSCRIPTS: THEMES, ISSUES, AND PERSPECTIVES
Abstract
This paper examines the diversity of scribal practices in Old Saxon manuscript traditions, focusing on the complex interplay between linguistic variety and scriptorial provenance. Through an analysis of key codices—including the M and C manuscripts of the Heliand —and a range of “minor” documents, this study offers a critical review of the most recent scholarly positions on this topic, as well as some new insights into regional writing habits, transmission contexts, and the evolving debate concerning provenance and genesis of Old Saxon texts.
