The Role of NATO in Global Security
Abstract
This paper analyzes the evolving role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in global security from its Cold War origins to its contemporary multidimensional functions. It examines NATO’s historical development, strategic transformation, and current operations, including peacekeeping, counterterrorism, cyber defense, and deterrence against state and non-state threats. Through case studies such as the Balkans, Afghanistan, and Ukraine, the paper evaluates NATO’s successes and limitations while addressing internal challenges like burden-sharing and political cohesion, as well as external pressures from emerging security threats. The study argues that NATO remains a vital actor in international security but must continue adapting through technological innovation, burden-sharing, and expanded global partnerships.
