Abstract

Mitochondria present in brown adipose tissue (BAT) contain UCP1, which enables them to convert chemical energy stored as triglycerides into heat (non-shivering thermogenesis). We identified a BAT-specific mitochondrial lipid species signature, namely high glycerophospholipid and low cholesterol levels, which affects browning capacity and UCP1 function. A BAT-specific KO of PISD, which decarboxylates PS to PE in mitochondria, impacts not only lipid droplet morphology and UCP1 activity, but also NAFLD-related measures, which depend on mouse housing temperature and diet.
