Vernalisatie bij granen uit gematigde temperatuur begrijpen en overwinnen
Abstract
Vernalization is the need to fulfill a low temperature requirement in cold sensitive plants to avoid delays in reaching the floral initiation. This requirement prevents the exposure of developing flowers to frost which could cause a decrease in grain production in temperate cereal crops, such as winter wheat or barley. In speed breeding this type of cultivar, this vernalization requirement extends the life cycle. Our proposal will aim to overcome the vernalization process in temperate cereals. The process of adaptation of different varieties to new regions and environmental conditions requires thorough understanding of temperate cereal phenology. While overcoming vernalization is an important objective, controlling the requirement of vernalization is another relevant objective of this project. In summary, we will aim to overcome the vernalization requirement and understand the regulators involved in vernalization.
