Demokrati till varje pris?: En analys av det svenska partistödets legitimering i den svenska politiska diskursen
Abstract
Swedish political party subsidies are a cornerstone of the country's political system, yet they remain a rarely debated and largely accepted practice. Unlike many other democracies,Sweden allocates significant public funds to political parties with little public scrutiny. Despite its democratic significance, the debate on the topic is surprisingly absent from extensive Swedish political discussion. This thesis investigates how the party subsidies is legitimized - or potentially contested - in Swedish political discourse, using democratic theory to uncover the underlying arguments concerning this unique system. By analyzing key perspectives from scholars, politicians, and public debates, this study shed light on how democratic legitimacy is constructed and maintained regarding this political mechanism.Overall, the analysis suggests that the dominant legitimation rests on arguments about fair competition and integrity, while participatory-democratic concerns are more often articulated as critique rather than as primary justification. This thesis aims to spark a broader discussion on the implications of public funding for political parties, particularly its impact on accountability, pluralism, and public trust in Swedish democracy.
