Abstract

The inventory of scientific journals in North, Central, and West Africa is difficult because international databases do not list the majority of these journals, which is a significant limitation of studies based on these international tools. Our approach was to use the international ISSN database, which assigns each journal an identifier, to list journals in nine African countries and characterize them according to several criteria: visibility, languages, themes, and open access. A total of 1,055 journals were identified in the nine countries: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Togo, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic. This dataset can be reused to improve scientific knowledge about the scientific publishing ecosystem in Africa, support institutional or national policies, and help funders set up financial support programs. This is an initial effort that could be consolidated across all African countries.
