Climate Change Impact on Tourism Supply and Demand in Europe

Abstract

European tourism is entering a period in which climate change is no longer a background sustainability issue, but a fundamental driver of market change. Heat stress, water scarcity, wildfire risk, flooding, declining snow reliability and coastal exposure are reshaping seasonality, destination competitiveness and long-term viability. At the same time, decarbonisation policies and shifting traveller expectations are altering demand and market access. These changes will not affect all destinations equally, creating diverging futures across regions and market segments. This project supports European Travel Commission and its member national tourism organisations with forward-looking, decision-grade intelligence to assess exposure, anticipate shifts in competitiveness, and identify robust strategies that remain effective under climate uncertainty.
