Abstract
The objective of this work is to analyze the proposal for the formation of man in the West present in the work The Christian Doctrine of Augustine of Hippo. In his writing, completed at the end of the 4th century AD, Augustine organizes various educational elements of Western culture, seeking to construct an ideal of man in society in order to preserve it. Augustine addresses the Romans, a period that marks the way of thinking about education in a religious system. Social history was used to analyze the work. Thus, it was understood that the West was undergoing a period of social transformation and that even in difficult times, Augustine presented the idea that it is necessary to get closer to the people in order to educate and instruct them, and that the formation of man must make him think, so that by living in society, he can think about preserving it.
