Ponerse en guardia ante el fin del mundo: reinvención en las artes visuales de la Guayaquil pospandémica
Abstract
Contemporary art has explored multiple ways of addressing the prospect of the end of the world in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. This article examines changes in artistic production processes in Guayaquil, Ecuador—a city that serves as a case study for understanding the challenges and difficulties of creating on the periphery during the pandemic. It analyzes how artists redefined their creative practices and how this reconfiguration has shaped the visual arts scene. The study draws on 20 interviews with artists, curators, and art experts residing in this city. The findings indicate that the pandemic generated new dynamics of production, circulation, and consumption, promoting artistic practices marked by precariousness and intensified mimeticism
