Abstract

This article begins by offering a concise synthesis of what we consider to be the central tenets of the decolonial aesthetic option. From this foundation, we move on to identify specific zones of tension in relation to aesthetic theory in dance, particularly concerning notions such as representation, self-referentiality, metaphor, form, identity, aesthetic colonialism, and artistic knowledge. If the idea of decentering, which underlies our argument, ultimately operates as a mobile interpretive strategy open to multiple readings, we propose the notion of choreographic expansion as a potential point of convergence between the decolonial option and critical dance theory. We ultimately argue that the prioritization of space over time, along with the conceptualization of bodily expansion as a form of political emancipation, marks a crucial intersection between both approaches
