Além da economia: uma análise relacional do trabalho infantil
Abstract
This article reviews Community Prevention of Child Labor by Isidro Maya Jariego, which offers an innovative perspective on child labor by situating it within a relational framework. Beyond explanations focused on poverty and legal norms, the book argues that child labor is reproduced through family practices, community norms, and institutional arrangements, and that its prevention depends on transforming these social networks. The volume combines case studies and programmatic reflections around two main axes: the causes and consequences of child labor and evidence-based intervention strategies. Three key prevention approaches are highlighted—community coalitions, conditional cash transfer programs, and compulsory schooling—each working by reorganizing the ties among families, schools, and communities. The school is also presented as a community hub, while public policies are framed as contexts that must balance universality with specificity. The book constitutes a relevant contribution for both researchers and practitioners, connecting social network analysis with community psychology and policy studies. It demonstrates that the sustainable eradication of child labor requires strengthening social cohesion, relational capital, and collective efficacy.
