Meme, Myself, and I: Body Image and Self-Worth in the Time of Social Media
Abstract
REFLECTIVE MEMO: I really enjoyed learning about how social media affects body image, especially in young women. As I started to research this topic, I was constantly met with the same information, and I was struggling to find unique or interesting claims. Most sources said that as young women use social media, the constant exposure to super thin models negatively impacts their self-image.This makes total sense, but it seemed too obvious.I was looking for deeper answers in my research and I wanted to learn about the lesser-known causes of body dissatisfaction. As I continued to search for more in-depth articles, I found that there are so many other factors that can contribute to the way that people are affected by social media, such as school environments or parental influences.I was interested to learn about all of the ways that body image can be influenced, but I still wanted to focus on social media platforms specifically because they are still expanding and the exact connection to self-esteem is still undetermined.
