Abstract

Forms of social exclusion, the definition of norms and of what lies outside them, find in the figure of the monster a site of representation, one that can be projected through the technologies of monstrosity that distinguish peripheral groups from dominant ones. In addition to framing this differentiation through concepts that allude to social monstrosity, this paper proposes two readings of the impossible monster as a way to articulate the play of opposites into which the hierarchical order of a community drives them. To this end, two examples from contemporary Hispanic short fiction are analyzed to explore the meaning and use of the two canonical figures of capitalist monsterology —the vampire and the zombie— and, through them, to account for the possibility of rebellion —as counter-hegemonic monstrosity— or submission —as hegemonic monstrosity—.
