El imaginario de las bibliotecas y sus representaciones utópicas y distópicas
Abstract
We examine representations of libraries in the utopian and dystopian traditions. We argue that libraries are fundamental symbolic elements in both traditions. We identify three main historical configurations in utopian representation: (1) universal libraries controlled by enlightened elites in Renaissance utopias, (2) self-managed public libraries as infrastructures for social change (19th-20th centuries), and (3) digitized, self-aware universal libraries in science fiction, where utopianism is reinterpreted technologically. In dystopias, we identify two variants: (1) the destruction of libraries due to their diversity of knowledge, which is incompatible with totalitarianism and (2) cyberpunk as a battleground for cognitive capitalism, where libraries serve social control. We conclude that tensions over the digitization and privatization of knowledge re-actualize historical dilemmas about access, control, and the social function of libraries.
