Abstract

The concept of an algorithm has played a central role in science over the past hundred years, beginning with the pioneering contributions of Alan Turing. With the advent of computer science, it has moved beyond the strictly mathematical domain to encompass increasingly broader aspects of technology, culture, and our everyday lives, ultimately leading to both the enthusiasm and the concerns now raised by the successes of machine learning and artificial intelligence. This book aims to present its essential aspects in a clear and accessible way, based on the conviction that a deeper understanding of it is fundamental for interpreting many aspects of the world in which we live.
