Abstract

The essay recognizes libraries and archives as devices for the preservation of memory that are traversed by a modern-colonial fracture. Based on a speculative exploration that focuses on bibliophagous insects, it questions forms of more-than-human inscription and the possibilities of recognizing repertoires of memory and knowledge in them. In light of the ongoing environmental collapse, it proposes to challenge modern logics of erasure and accumulation by thinking about modes of inscription and archives beyond the human. Thus, it urges us to commit to imagining civil repositories capable of accommodating a multiplicity of worlds and forms of existence. It raises the need for an affective and relational dimension of memory that addresses vital interdependencies and opens cosmopolitical horizons for common futures.
