Abstract

This research aims to analyze the social, legal, and political impact of the constitutional amendments approved in Ecuador in 2015 to determine whether they affected the stability of the Ecuadorian state's democratic system. The study incorporates the perspectives of various scholars and historical archives to address the subject, beginning with the approval process in the National Assembly. It provides a brief explanation of legislative power, as well as constituent and constituted power, to better understand the functions of this branch of government. Furthermore, the study examines citizen participation and the democratic mechanisms utilized during this process to trace the timeline of the amendments until their reversal in 2018. The analysis generates insights into the overall process, with a specific emphasis on establishing whether oversight was conducted in accordance with the law or if, conversely, political control and latent polarization carried more weight. Additionally, it analyzes the decisions of the Constitutional Court of Ecuador on this matter to ultimately determine whether the amendments under study affected the fundamental structure of the State.
