Do Environmental Crises Justify Restrictions on Individual Freedoms?
Abstract
This project examines public acceptance of environmental policies that impose restrictions on individual freedoms. While similar constraints have been accepted in crises like the COVID-19 pandemic or security threats, it remains unclear under what conditions citizens perceive environmental restrictions as justified. To explore this, we conduct a survey experiment with 17,000 respondents across 12 countries, using a combination of a discrete choice experiment and a vignette experiment. Our study aims to provide insights into the political feasibility of environmental policies and the factors that shape public support for such measures.
