Abstract

This seminar traces a trajectory from intermedial analysis to inclusive pedagogy by examining Circle Singing as a methodology for English and music education at Università degli Studi Roma Tre. The study investigates how musical and verbal modalities interact within collective vocal improvisation to create accessible, embodied, and multisensory learning environments. In addition to outlining the conceptual foundations of this approach—grounded in intermediality, multimodality, and embodied cognition—the seminar presents the first preliminary results from the Circle Singing laboratory conducted with students in DAMS and Educational Sciences at Roma Tre. These initial findings, drawn from a quasi-experimental research design, reveal measurable improvements in musical perception as well as in English phonetic accuracy, highlighting the potential of Circle Singing to enhance learners’ aural, vocal, and linguistic competencies.Ultimately, the seminar argues that Circle Singing offers a replicable, flexible, and inclusive pedagogical model capable of bridging artistic expression and language learning, while fostering participation, motivation, and collaborative engagement across diverse university contexts.
