The Inquiry Framework (TIF v1.3): Reasoning Under Constraint with Explicit Limits
Abstract
The Inquiry Framework (TIF) is a constraint-aware discipline for reasoning and action in environments characterized by limited time, incomplete information, and irreversible outcomes. Rather than predicting outcomes or optimizing behavior, the framework describes the local structure of possibility: the current state of a system, the active constraints acting upon it, and the set of transitions that remain realistically reachable. Agency is treated as graded maneuverability under constraint rather than as absolute freedom or inevitability. The core model (Hypostatic Theory) partitions situations into regimes of differing constraint density, within which recovery margins and reasoning reliability vary. Operational layers provide bounded tools for practice, including explicit abort criteria for inquiry, safeguards against confidence hardening, separation of ethical constraints from structural explanation, and mechanisms for recognizing predictable human cognitive distortions under scale and novelty. The framework is descriptive and explicitly non-predictive. It makes no metaphysical or teleological claims and defines clear limits of validity. Its purpose is to reduce overconfidence, expose boundary conditions, and preserve optionality in high-consequence domains. Applications include aviation, maritime operations, engineering systems design, and human–AI collaboration.
