Norme et variation : Les analogies verbales en français
Abstract
This article examines French non-standard verb conjugations such as croivent, observed in vernacular speech and widely recognized as arising through analogy (MORIN 1987). We contribute to the discussion by classifying these forms according to the type of analogy involved: trans-paradigmatic (influence from another paradigm), intra-paradigmatic (influence from an element within the same paradigm), or simultaneously involving both types. A comparison with historical data shows that these phenomena are not isolated, but reflect common morphological and morphosyntactic trends in the history of French. Finally, preliminary sociological data suggest that such forms trigger marked metalinguistic reactions, revealing a rejection of heterogeneity and a social devaluation of the speaker’s discourse and identity.
