Not in the Loop
Abstract
Reflective Memo: In English 145, I wanted to try to write a series of three essays focused around the "Three R's" of waste conservation: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. While I am completely on-board for efforts to reduce waste, the current strategies to mitigate our overwhelming waste problem are disappointing considering the strides we've made in other industries. For many of us, The Three R's idea was forced from an early age, and while an effective mnemonic, are only somewhat effective in actually conserving our resources. With this essay, I tried to highlight Reusing specifically, both as a concept and in practice. As it happened, the Loop system had recently been unveiled when I was searching for a topic, and this paper attempts to evaluate the conservation system on a handful of criteria, based on the somewhat sparse information available about it at the time.I enjoyed the research that went into the paper as well as learning more about Loop's vision.Ultimately, I took a stance against the company based on one key flaw of the model in practice, but I believe that the concept is solid and that Loop may become synonymous with "Reusing" in the foreseeable future.
