Strategies for solving word problems with percentages
Abstract
This thesis focuses on the analysis of problem-solving strategies and the performance of 8th-grade students in elementary schools when solving word problems involving percentages, as well as a comparison of these strategies with the approaches used by their parents and teachers. The aim of the study was to determine which strategies students employ when solving percentage word problems, how successful these strategies are, and whether there is a statistically significant relationship between the strategies chosen by students and those preferred by their parents or teachers. The research was conducted using four tasks representing common types of percentage problems taught in mathematics at the elementary school level. For each solution, the strategies employed were recorded, most frequently including logical reasoning, the rule of three, calculations via one percent, calculations using the percentage part, and solutions using fractions. For each of the four tasks, the results and strategies were compared across the three groups of respondents-students, their parents, and teachers. Statistical testing using the chi-square test revealed statistically significant differences in preferred problem- solving approaches between the groups. This indicates that the strategies chosen by students differ from...
