Opportunities to Enhance Biology Education with AI Tools
Abstract
The thesis examines the possibilities of using artificial intelligence (AI) tools in teaching biology at lower- and upper-secondary schools in the Czech Republic. The goal of the thesis was to provide a theoretical grounding for AI in education with a focus on science and biology, including curricular contexts, to propose didactically well-considered ideas for using AI in different phases of the lesson on the basis of the professional literature, and at the same time to understand how selected teachers actually use these tools, what benefits and limitations they perceive, and what recommendations they have formulated for practice. The thesis combines a review of current knowledge, a set of concrete teaching ideas and a qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 17 science and biology teachers. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. The findings showed that teachers understand AI as a diverse toolkit in which generative language models play a key role, complemented by quizzes, visualisations and study applications. According to the respondents, AI tools are most often used in the preparation of lessons and, to a lesser extent, directly in pupil activities. The respondents emphasised benefits in terms of pupil motivation, visual clarity, differentiation and work with...
