Abstract

The purpose of this article is to determine the role of bioeconomy in addressing climate challenges based on an ecosystem approach to the study of socio-economic development in the context of green and digital transformation through the effective use of bioresources and innovative technologies, which reduces dependence on fossil fuels and creates new bio-based industries. economic development in the context of green and digital transformation through the effective use of bioresources and innovative technologies, which reduces dependence on fossil fuels and creates new bioproducts, contributing to the development of a carbon-neutral economy and resilience in a sustainable and inclusive manner. The article emphasizes that at the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions, the global economy will exhaust its remaining carbon budget by the end of the decade. It emphasizes that climate change, biodiversity loss, and other environmental problems are among the greatest social challenges of the 21st century. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) indicators are presented in terms of climate change, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality. The Environmental Performance Index (EPI) indicators are presented in terms of climate change, environmental health, and ecosystem vitality. The indicators of Ukraine's Environmental Performance Index for 2024 are presented: indicators for “Biodiversity and Habitat”; indicators for “Forestry, Fisheries, and Agriculture”; Air Pollution, Water Resources, and Waste Management indicators; Climate Change indicators. It is emphasized that the restoration of natural ecosystems in Ukraine is critically important due to the large-scale environmental damage caused by the war, which includes water, air, soil, and the destruction of biodiversity, and requires a comprehensive approach in the context of green and digital transformation and new economic models, in particular the circular bioeconomy, the smart economy, and smart specialisation. It is emphasized that the European Union considers the circular bioeconomy to be one of the key instruments for achieving climate neutrality by 2050, which is in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement. On November 27, 2025, the European Commission adopted a new Strategy for a competitive and sustainable EU bioeconomy, which aims to build a clean, circular, and decarbonized European economy by stimulating innovation, new markets for biomaterials, and the sustainable use of biomass
