A Farmer, A WAVE, and a Navy Wife
Abstract
William Dickie, a North Dakotan farmer from the depression era, was not blessed with a house full of boys to help run the farm and eventually take over the business. There were no strong, strapping lads to milk the cows or mend the fences, and there were no clever gentlemen to understand finances and production numbers.Instead, there were four capable, intelligent girls that would fill the masculine void in the Dickie family line. And little did he know, that was all he would need.Marjorie Joyce Dickie was born to Olive and William Dickie on a cold rainy night in Cavalier, North Dakota in 1922.There was no doctor because, as she put it in her memoirs, "[She] was anxious to see this big beautiful world and could not wait for [them]" (Connell 5).Her ambitious, resilient attitude would help her through the rest of her life.A life that not many other women or men would have had the strength to succeed in as she did.
