Abstract

The article addresses the relevance of project management development in the Ukrainian IT sector under conditions of economic transformation, digitalization, intensified global competition, and increased uncertainty caused by wartime challenges. The rapid growth of IT projects, the rising cost of human capital, shortened innovation cycles, and the widespread adoption of remote and hybrid work models have significantly reshaped management practices and professional requirements. In this context, the role of the project manager acquires strategic importance, extending beyond operational coordination to include leadership, resource optimization, risk mitigation, and value creation. The purpose of the study is to analyze current trends and structural changes in the project management market of Ukraine’s IT sector, identify key shifts in professional competencies, and outline prospects for the development of the project manager profession within the digital economy. The research methodology is based on analytical generalization, comparative analysis, and systematization of labor market trends, professional roles, and competency models in IT project management. Methods of abstraction, synthesis, and logical analysis were applied to identify dominant patterns and relationships shaping the modern project management environment. The results of the study demonstrate a clear transformation of the project manager’s role from a traditional administrative function to a multifunctional position integrating elements of leadership, strategic thinking, communication, and change management. The findings reveal an increasing demand for professionals capable of combining project management with product management, business analysis, and data-driven decision-making. Particular emphasis is placed on the growing importance of soft skills, including adaptability, emotional intelligence, stress resilience, and effective communication, which have become critical in managing distributed teams and complex stakeholder environments. At the same time, professional certification and continuous skill development are identified as essential factors for maintaining competitiveness in both domestic and global labor markets. The practical value of the article lies in its applicability for IT companies, project managers, and educational institutions. The results can be used to improve project management practices, adapt training and certification programs, and support strategic workforce development in the Ukrainian IT sector under conditions of digital transformation.
