Abstract

The concept of healing environments integrates architecture, health, and community to shape hospital spaces that support well-being and recovery. Extending beyond medical treatment alone, this research explores how physical, social, and natural environments influence the experiences of patients, caregivers, and healthcare workers. The Healing Environments project done at Kirehe District Hospital investigates how design and environmental factors can transform healthcare experiences within Rwanda’s health system. Grounded in cultural values, community participation, and sustainability, the research explores how hospital environments can be intentionally designed to promote holistic healing, comfort, and well-being. Through the examination of physical design, social interaction, and natural elements, the study considers how healthcare spaces shape emotional and physical recovery. By engaging with the lived experiences of patients, caregivers, and staff, the research defines what a healing environment means in the Rwandan context and proposes evidence-based design strategies that align local culture with patient-centered care. The project ultimately offers a conceptual framework to inform future healthcare planning and design in Rwanda, supporting hospitals as spaces of treatment, dignity, and community connection.
