Development of artificial intelligence applications to strengthen teacher competency in physical education
Abstract
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education represents a transformation with significant potential to optimize teaching and learning. However, its adoption at teacher training levels, especially in non-technical areas such as Physical Education (PE), is still limited. This Educational Innovation project, carried out at the Meritorious Veracruz Normal School "Enrique C. Rébsamen", aimed to introduce 30 students of the Bachelor's Degree in PE to the development of functional applications based on AI, despite their practical profile and their lack of previous experience in programming. The methodology used was mixed and based on Project-Based Learning (PBL) using low-code tools. The results demonstrated the viability of the model: the students managed to develop nine functional applications (exceeding the goal of five), which included systems for the digital roll call and the Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator. An 85% reduction in time spent on administrative tasks (from 2 hours to 30 minutes per week) was obtained, and 70% of students perceived improvements in the accuracy of physical assessments. This experience validates AI as an accessible and ethical means to enhance the technological skills of future teachers and to generate transferable tools that optimize professional practice.
