Abstract

The present text is intended to be a tribute to the Romanian thinker and writer Emil Cioran, on the occasion of his 30th anniversary of posterity. A Romanian thinker by origin, born and educated in Romania, Emil Cioran chose to complete his education and work in France. Thus, Cioran presents himself as a homo duplex, belonging to both cultures, although he wanted to be a metaphysical stateless person. It can be appreciated that Emil Cioran was a universal spirit, through his vision of existence ”the skeptic on duty of a declining world, not a philosopher”, as he called himself, in his work addressing themes such as the contingency of the human being, the original sin, the end of civilization, the tragic meaning of history, the role of life and death, the refusal of consolation through religious faith. What we aim to highlight in this article is the fact that although he wrote perfectly in French, he thought and lived in the homeland of the Romanian language. Romanian culture was the foundation of his being. Although he was considered the greatest French philosopher alive, he remained a Romanian citizen until his death, according to his birthright. Due to the fact that he was not a French citizen, today all the world dictionaries write the Romanian nationality under Emil Cioran's heading. His work is integrated into the universal culture, both through its problematic, and especially through the depth and originality of his ideas, whose influence continues to echo throughout the world.
