Social dimensions in municipal solid waste modelling
Abstract
This project aims to advance the integration of social aspects into the mathematical modelling of municipal solid waste management systems. While environmental and economic criteria are often well represented in models, social impacts remain underexplored and inconsistently quantified. The project addresses this gap through a combination of systematic review, data analysis, and model development. It focuses on understanding how social dimensions are represented in existing models and on creating a framework that mathematically incorporates these factors into simulation and optimisation tools for integrated solid waste management. The outcomes will contribute to the development of socially responsive models and decision-support tools, particularly applicable to developing countries where informal recycling plays a key role. The project is part of a doctoral research conducted at the University of São Paulo, with a research period at the Technical University of Denmark, and is publicly shared through OSF to ensure transparency and reproducibility.
