Abstract

In recent decades, the ways by which knowledge production is organised have shifted, from traditional disciplinary structures towards integral approaches to societal challenges. This thesis introduces the concept of interdisciplinary disciplines - areas of knowledge production which have emerged in this context. Such areas of knowledge production act very much like disciplines despite drawing from multiple disciplinary traditions. The thesis is based on case studies of two such research areas - migration studies and policy sciences - and employs a novel combination of bibliometrics and qualitative data to construct their emergence and evolution.
