Abstract

This thesis examines the increasing and transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) and analyses its influence on leadership processes. The study focuses particularly on the significance of emotional intelligence (EI), humanity, and empathy in leadership, acknowledging both the opportunities and limitations of AI in addressing these essential human-centered leadership needs. The primary objective is to understand how AI can support emotionally intelligent leadership and whether the integration between artificial intelligence and emotional intelligence can enhance leadership effectiveness. The research of this thesis adopts a qualitative methodology, utilizing semi-structured interviews with individuals holding leadership positions and diverse managerial backgrounds. The findings emphasize recurring themes related to emotional intelligence, such as managing and recognizing emotions, leading by example and fostering open communication. The interviewees consistently highlighted that social connection, soft skills, and the ability to respond to emotions remain irreplaceable – especially in times of organizational change driven by AI integration or other transformations. Furthermore, the findings demonstrate a shared understanding among the participants that AI has already fundamentally transformed leadership and the work-place. AI is reshaping task efficiency, tools and organizational processes, while introducing new challenges that require leaders to rapidly develop new competencies and strengthen their AI literacy. Although AI enables fast, data-driven decision-making, emotional intelligence remains essential in providing human judgement. As AI usage grows, the integration of AI and emotional intelligence becomes increasingly vital for effective leadership.
