Abstract

This paper will explore the ever-developing field of online out-of-classroom activity, such associal media, in relation to the development of English language ability (Extramural English). It also will analyze the impact this activity has inside the classroom from a languagedevelopment perspective and aims to be able to connect evolving languages with access toonline social activity at home while also connecting them to established sociocultural theory. To do this we have systematically gathered peer-reviewed research papers and structuredthem using thematic analysis. We have then identified our findings, dividing themcategorically and separating them into direct findings about Extramural English, the impacton language development, and how teaching practices are affected.Evidence found in the results of this study indicate that social media has had a direct impactboth positively and negatively on the development of English language. The researchcurrently available shows that there are not only benefits to spoken language, but also thatlistening and reading ability are positively impacted. However, written development isaffected minimally, and the differences in access to varied types of social media at homehave a detrimental impact on the variance of language development in the classroom, whichcan present a challenge for modern teaching. This paper concludes that more research must be done specifically on younger Englishlanguage learners to precisely analyze any long-term impact of these findings.
