Abstract

The Grammar of Water: Sauna Workshops propose a somatic reading and writing exercise, which will be performed before and after saunas (through disseminated readings and written responses). The Sauna Workshops will be explored by a research community formed of international and local (Goldsmiths College) members to explore ways in which to re-relate us to the planet through our watery bodies. The sauna and plunge pool environment is an important tool in tangibly connecting us to the cycles of water that flow through our bodies; from the porosity of skin in the sauna, to the immersion in cold plunges, and the cycle of drinking water and showering in-between each rotation. The Grammar of Water opens-up this embodied practice to the public, who are invited to a Sauna Workshop. The results of this process will also be disseminated to the public and policy holders through a performance event and a future publication of the same name. The Grammar of Water is part of the larger Fluid Ground project (2023-ongoing), which explores our relationship to the planet through the medium of water, learning how to map-with water and relate differently with the planet to create climate hope. The Grammar of Water: Sauna Workshops is developing the project in terms of building a methodology for an embodied fluid writing practice, which can be further developed into a toolkit for communities and policy makers.
