Abstract

Creative writing as a teaching and learning strategy has been greatly expanded upon in the Gy25 curriculum, which introduces both creative writing as a unique course but also expands on the former English course by strengthening the writing ability aspect of English education. Despite this development, there remains a notable lack of research on how creative writing specifically may be fruitfully applied through various ways to improve students' writing ability. The dominant academic perspective of creative writing has been primarily to examine the usage of creative writing in specific contexts, constrained by school ages, nationality or writing ability level. In this study, we thematically analyzed 10 empirical studies to broadly study the overall relationship between creative writing and writing ability development to see how they correlate and how it can be practically applied in a Swedish upper-secondary EFL classroom context. As a result, we found creative writing to be versatile both in contextual application but also in classroom methodology. Creative writing may be used in multiple ways to strengthen students' writing ability. These findings suggest that creative writing may be applied in many ways to reach the goals of the Creative writing in English course but also that creative writing holds significant potential for application within other EFL courses, such as English and Rhetorics in English.
