Preserving Built Heritage, Empowering Cultural Life: Restoration Practices in Stone Town, Zanzibar
Abstract
This case study investigates how restoration practices in Stone Town, Zanzibar, contribute to the preservation of built heritage and support cultural coexistence within its historic urban fabric. Focusing on two key buildings—the Majestic Cinema and the Hifadhi Building—the study examines their architectural conditions, patterns of use, and the broader challenges that shape heritage management in the area. The research draws on a combination of qualitative methods, including field observations, semi‑structured interviews with key stakeholders, and the review of existing documents and drawings. These methods provided insights into restoration approaches, everyday spatial practices, and the social and institutional factors influencing heritage preservation in Stone Town. Complementing these techniques, the study also incorporates field sketches, photographic documentation, and the development of a 3D model of one of the case-study buildings. These visual outputs enhanced the analysis by illustrating spatial configurations, material conditions, and user interactions within the buildings. The 3D modelling process, in particular, enabled a clearer demonstration of interior functionality and helped visualise how restoration interventions affect usability. Findings suggest that while informal training plays a significant role in sustaining both tangible and intangible heritage practices, its limited integration with formal technical education constrains long‑term capacity building within the wider community. Overall, the study aims to contribute to local heritage discussions and inform future curriculum development related to restoration and community‑based heritage practices.
